The Chak De! India babe Vidya Malvade who headed the Indian hockey team and attained victory for it, both on-screen as well as off-screen, is back on the silver screen, with her next venture Striker, releasing this Friday. Vidya Malvade sums up her feelings at the moment: "Every Friday is as jittery for actors like me and this time, it's nothing different as this is after Chak De! I have my fingers crossed."

Vidya will be sharing screen space with co-actor Siddharth Narayanan, Nicolette and Padmapriya Janakiraman in her next film Striker. Priya Rajendran catches up with the actress in an exclusive tête-à-tête, as she gets candid about her five-year journey into Bollywood, modelling and her experience as a flight stewardess.

Why such a long gap after Chak De!?

I have been very selective about scripts and after a long time when Chandan Arora approached me with this script, I totally loved it.

So do you think you have struck the right deal with Striker?

(Laughs) Yeah, I think so. Though it was not for the lead, I was fairly happy with the character that I was getting to play in the film. Chandan Arora is a fantastic director who came up with this stunning script. When he chose me for the movie, everything seemed to fit in fine too. He really knows how to tap talent in all his actors. Plus it was great to share screen space with my co-actors Siddharth, Nicolette and Padmapriya.

What do you think will be the public's reaction to the movie?

That only time will tell. Though I personally think it will be a great movie to watch out for and people should love the flick.

Industry reactions to your movies…

Right now, all I can say is that I have been noticed by some people and Chak De! certainly worked wonders for me. I was approached by a few directors including Chandan Arora who chose me for "Striker". It was a wonderful opportunity to work with him.

Your role as Devi in the movie…

Devi is a young woman who belongs to the lower, middle-class strata of society, who has dreams of making it big. Eventually, she wants to become a successful corporate woman though she also likes to put her family first. I could relate well to the role as I am also from a similar background where I was encouraged to study, become independent by getting a job etc, by my family.

Any movie which you watched recently and loved it…

"Natrang" is an amazing Marathi film and the cast is also great. Atul Kulkarni has done some brilliant work in it. I would love to work with him in the future.

If not an actor, what would Vidya Malvade be, today…?

Dancing has been my passion and I would have been a dancer. I have done practically everything from modelling, acting, brand endorsements, and even a flight stewardess. Every 10 years, God gives me a chance to do something new. Next, I want to turn producer. Someday, I will open a dance academy.

Hug and Kiss ‘em & Hold ‘em close to you!

From the moment I conceived, it was my fantasy to have a super tactile bond with my child after he/she would be born (for the longest possible time, I felt it would be a girl!). After my son was born, things became different and the first three months were extremely painful feeding him or holding him thanks to my C-section stitches. So all maternal feelings vanished into thin air and all I could think was sleep or having “me-time”.  There was hardly a chance to cuddle up with him! Post partum depression had hit me big time and me not being able to calm down a screaming infant had dipped my morale too. Motherhood was nothing like I had imagined it would be! Besides I was terrified that my son would not accept me if I didn’t develop a bond early on. Of course, that did not happen. It was a mom’s fear that had spoken. After he entered the infamous toddler phase, I became the quintessential “villain” for my son – the usual don’t do this and that. Yet again, my dreams of becoming...

BPOs don multiple hats...

Till the advent of the computers, all papers and legal documents of every company were filed, stored and catalogued systematically in the form of files stacked in cabinets. If one had to access any of the data, they would have to employ people for the same work. Small and big organizations had to employ extra manpower if they wanted additional help regarding verification of financial transactions and company expansion activities. Outsourcing of jobs was unknown to many in the pre-digital era. Though, the system of awarding contracts to a third party for making machinery parts had begun long ago. Slowly, but steadily, organizations began understanding that they need to outsource other jobs as well, to increase the productivity of their company as well as performance of employees. They started creating strategies for to outsource their business to other companies, minimizing their own labor costs. The term business process outsourcing or BPO caught on with organizations, which start...
