The comedy film ‘The Incredible Burt Wonderstone’ stars Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), Doug Munny (James Gandolfini), Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell), Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi), Jane (Olivia Wilde) and Rance Holloway (Alan Arkin).
Directed by Don Scardino, the film is about Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton who are childhood friends and the best magician duo in Las Vegas. The plot centers on their earlier days of glory and how one unfortunate incident changes everything. Jane (Wilde) plays the duo’s glamorous assistant. While Wonderstone vainly basks in his magician stardom, his partner keeps tolerating his arrogant ways.
While the magicians are rapidly losing their former glory, and their ticket sales take a plunge, a shrewd street magician Steve Gray (Carrey) cashes-in and starts gaining popularity. With his incredible stunts, he ends up stealing all their shows.
Meanwhile the wealthy casino owner Doug Munny (Gandolfini) threatens to end their contract because of their downfall. The magicians decide to do everything to get back their top slot. In this bid, during one of their acts, Burt accidentally injures Anton, following which the duo part ways. Anton ends his ties with Wonderstone and shifts to the Far East. The next part showcases the fall of Wonderstone whose vanity gets the better of him, making him lose all that he had during his career. Following his fall, Wonderstone ends up performing in a retirement home where he meets Arkin, the magician who was the first to inspire him to become a magician at the beginning of his career.
In Carrell’s words, ‘He (Wonderstone) is incredibly narcissistic, burned out and self-centered. He needs to rekindle his friendship with his best friend (Marvelton) and needs to find himself and his love of magic again. It’s a very identifiable story. … I thought it was a hilarious world. It was something I had never seen before in a comedy.’
Describing Jane’s character, Carrell says, ‘She’s tougher and more intelligent and focused than the women he’s accustomed to dating.’ Jim Carrey has played characters like Truman Burbank, Lloyd Christmas, Ace Ventura and Joel Barish. He says, ‘My character is one of those guys who would mess his hair up for three hours to show he doesn’t care.’
The film premiered as the opening film of the SXSW festival and was introduced by Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, and Olivia Wilde.
