In a bid to boost their popularity in the e-reader market, retailers are expanding their Nook Free Fridays offer. Till now, readers could download a different paid Nook Book for free, every Friday. The latest expansion offers free applications too, apart from the free e-book.
The book retailer is hoping to cash in on the application fad so that keep customers will keep re-visiting the Nook application store and download books and other applications. It is expected to be more of a ‘trial run’ to increase rapport between Nook and its platform, the Android operating system.
The Nook’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nook) and blog (www.nook.com/blog) will display free content based on gaming and entertainment, which will be available each week. ‘We are thrilled to offer NOOK customers a variety of exciting apps from top developers for free every week,’ said Claudia Romanini, VP of NOOK Apps, NOOK Media, LLC. ‘NOOK Free Fridays is the perfect way to highlight our vast offering of exciting content, including apps for gaming, entertainment, productivity and more available in the NOOK Store while offering our customers a great value.’
The device offers a one-year warranty period. The Nook model has a 1,440 x 900 pixels resolution, which is the highest of any among the tablets available. Run by a dual-core processor, the device has Wi-Fi, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB onboard storage, a microSD card slot, a weight of 315g and applications like the NOOK Scrapbook and NOOK video.
Nook offers free reading applications for Mac and Windows PC; Android, iPhone and iPod touch; Android tablet, iPad and NOOK Kids for iPad. The NookStudy is a free eTextbook application that offers a wide range of digital study tools and is compatible with the Windows and Mac OS X.
In addition, Nook offers a ‘Read in Store’ that allows visitors to stream and read any book for up to an hour while shopping in their store. The content can be downloaded directly to the Nook HD, HD+, Tablet, and Color digital readers.
Barnes & Noble had developed the e-reader Nook, based on the Android operating system, and launched it in 2009. The first Nook device had Wi-fi and AT&T 3G wireless connection.
