Director Martin Scorcese’ Oscar-winning film Gangs of New York is all set to enter the
small screen soon. The movie made in 2002, was based on New York’s underworld
at the beginning of the 19th century. It had leading stars like Leonardo di
Caprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. The film had won 10 Oscars
Nearly a decade has passed after the cult movie was made and the director is collaborating with Miramax studios to recreate its magic on TV in the form of a television series. It will concentrate on the corruption that had set into the underworld during that era in the cities of New York, Chicago and New Orleans.
Director Martin Scorcese says, ‘This time and era of America’s history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.’
This is Scorcese’s second such venture on television. His first project, a television series called Boardwalk Empire, also produced by him, is running its fourth season successfully on HBO.
The chairman of Miramax had high praises for the legendary
director. He attributed the reason for collaborating with him on this
television series as: ‘his dedication to
quality and the art of storytelling continues to excite everyone who works with
him and watches his films and television programs.' He added, 'We could not think of a better partner for
this project than the creator of the wonderful film on, which it is based.'
